Democracy & internet

Democracy & internet

With the time passing by, the essence of democracy as well as its tools have been evolving, though it has never been before so easy to access and exercise as today – in the online era. Internet is an equally useful tool for the expression of the freedoms of association and assembly, right to elect and to be elected, to communicate with citizens through personal and public platforms or social media. Internet facilitates the dialogue and supports the citizen’s engagement.

Our goals are to:

  • Raise awareness about benefits of online participation in the democratic processes
  • Creating tools and methods for better participation of young people in the online communities
  • Promoting human rights based approaches in education of young people for democracy

Online dimension easies the access to express and exercise democracy for the under-represented groups of citizens (people with disabilities, minorities, people who live/study abroad and still want take an active part in the life of their community, parents with small children and youth). As never before, everyone has a great opportunity to participate through and by means of the internet.

In terms of openness and information, online world eases democracy for citizens in terms of expression of their opinions and better democracy dialogue involvement, for authorities and state institutions by access to consultations and interaction with citizens, for international and global institutions. Crucially important issue of the access to education is partially solved by means of online tools, what positively influences such aspects of life of society as people`s awareness, economic and emotional self-realization, readiness to cooperate for better future. It is also very important to stress out the transparency of information that the online communities bring and open sources of information that can help people create non-biased political and democratic decisions, which is very important for young people and their participation in democratic processes.

Citizens` interest for the democratic inclusion raises due to the easier access to it by means of e-petitions, e-consultations, e-voting and participatory budgets with e-participation platforms. At the same time, inclusion of young people to exercise democracy and to meet their rights goes in line with the online high speed youth life-style. Online participation can also mean younger voting age in the future and participating fully in the democratic processes.
