Children & internet

Nowadays we say that children are born with devices. They are taking active roles in the online world in their early age. There is a wide range of risks they are facing when using the internet- from being exposed to inappropriate materials to becoming victims of harassment and pedophilia. This calls for empowering them to be more careful when online but also to empower people from their support network whilst working on systematical approach.

Our efforts will go in direction of making children themselves become aware of their own safety online and their rights and obligations in this sense.

Our goals are to:

  • Increase digital safety for children
  • Develop new methods for ensuring safe internet for children
  • Involve more subjects to children support network by empowering teachers and parents to take an active role in ensuring digital safety.
  • Influence development of policies supporting children’s welfare and security

The context and conditions in which new generations are growing in are shaping other topics relevant for them such as education, safety, health, citizenship, employability and other.

Parents, teachers and all pre millennials have been denied from the essential knowledge about the nature and structure of digital communication compared to the one that young generations have. The lack of dialogue and cooperation among generations about the online challenges and how to overcome them represents huge issue in society. For adults the challenge is that they have little understanding of the phenomena and for children the fact that they are left alone online very often can cause problems if they can’t deal with the circumstances themselves. Both children and their parents and teachers are in the situation where they think “but what is there to talk about, we don’t understand each other and therefore how can we support each other”. Parents and teachers need is to get the necessary knowledge to be more involved in lives of their children and their students especially when it comes to their role of supporters and defenders which is impossible for them if they don’t know the territory and possible dangers.

Children are, as time goes by, more aware that some situations can’t be safely wrapped without “adults” and support system. But how can they go to them if they don’t know even the bases of what is going on?

Methods of HRE for the virtual life of young people will be added further as contribution of those who work on fighting for human rights in the virtual world and believe that human rights online need to be equally respected as human rights in the real world.

If you want to provide your experience and expertise in the fields of human rights and non-formal education and help us develop joint HUB of HRE for the virtual world, go to our CONTRIBUTE section.
